How we ended up living in a moving house
We’re Doug and Christy, and since the summer of 2024 we haven’t had a fixed address.
It wasn’t a dramatic decision so much as a gradual revelation. We were getting older, and could feel time setting in. Our boys are young. If we waited until they were out of the house, we might not have the energy to do this. They wouldn’t get out of high school until we were both in our late 60’s. We decided we wanted to travel this country and show it to our boys while we were still able to do things like white water rafting and enjoy it. We sold what wouldn’t fit, kept what mattered, and left at the beginning of August.
What this site is
Mostly a record for ourselves, and an easy way to share that with our friends and family. Every stop (well, almost) we make gets written up: where we went, what we did, what was worth the drive, and what we’d skip if we came back.
We try to be honest about the parts that don’t photograph well. The nights in a gravel lot behind a truck stop. The week the water pump died in a place with no cell signal. The campground that looked beautiful online and backed onto a rail yard.
Why not social media?
We have the accounts, but we hardly use them any more. They’re built to reward short viral video, and that isn’t what we’re making. Long write-ups with a lot of photographs don’t fit there. So the site is the real home, and the mailing list is how you hear about new posts.
The rig
That’s a big part of the story. We’ve been in a 2024 Brinkley G-3950 for this adventure. We started out pulling it with a Ford F-350 DRW, but that truck got manhandled by the trailer on rough roads, so we upgraded to a Frieghtliner Cascadia 113. That pulls the trailer down the road MUCH nicer.
Get in touch
We read everything, and we’d rather answer a question once in public than ten times in private — if it’s a good one it usually turns into a tips entry.
